Artist’s View

Join select artists from Tannery Art studios on an informal tour of Drawing Biennial 2015. Andrew Bick, Benjamin Deakin, Laura Eldret, Sarah Macdonald, and Ana Rojas Vega will introduce their work and select their favourites from the 263 works on view.

Andrew Bick (b.1963, Coleford, Gloucestershire)  lives and works in London. Selected solo exhibitons include: School Studies: an architectural problem, Von Bartha Chesa, s'Chanf, Switzerland (2012/ 13); School Studies: Ghosts, Arguments, Hales Gallery, London (2012); School Studies: an architectural problem, INDEX, project space, Stroud, UK (2012); School Studies, recent work and selected work since 1993, Galerie Von Bartha, Basel, Switzerland (2012); and Savage School Window Gallery, Vyner Street, London (2010). Bick is represented by Hales Gallery, London.

Benjamin Deakin (b.1977) lives and works in London. Deakin studied at Kingston University and Central Saint Martins college of Art and Design respectively, gaining an MA in Fine Art in 2006. He was recently awarded a residency in the Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture in NW Canada where he spent three months researching a new body of work. In 2008 he curated NORDLUST, a group exhibition at Crimes Town Gallery. Selected solo exhibitions include Nothing to be Done, Tannery Arts Space, London (2010), Inscape, St Martins College, Cumbria (2003), Hospitalfield House, The Hospitalfield Trust, Arbroath (2002).

Laura Eldret (b.1982, Macclesfield) lives and works in London. Recent projects include The Juicers (2015) for Fig-2 at ICA, London; Hey! (2014) Rough Play, a commission for South London Gallery (2013); Power Plays, a solo exhibition at The Gallery, Bournemouth (2012); Fought, a re-enacted boxing match working with fire fighters and a new ‘ritual’ as part of a residency at Camden Arts Centre (2011). Group exhibitions include Ikon (2013), Focal Point Gallery (2012), Glasgow International (2012), Baltic (2012), Five Hundred Dollars (2010). Eldret was also co-founder and co-director of CollectingLiveArt (2007 -10).

Sarah Macdonald (b. 1977, London) lives and works in London. Macdonald received her BA from Goldsmiths 1997-2000 and her MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art 2007-2009. She is a recipient of the Clare Winsten Memorial Award (2009). Macdonald's paintings, often large scale, are layered surfaces of planes of colour and nuances of tone which endeavour to explore the form and space and light studied in her line drawings made directly from architecture. Selected group exhibitions include Working on the Inside, Tannery, London (2012), Creekside Open, Selected by Dexter Dalwood, APT London (2011), Civil Twilight, Curated by Marcus Cope, B&N Gallery, London (2011), Mr Mercer, Oriel Scyharth Gallery, Glyndwr University, Wales (2011). 

Ana Rojas Vega (b.1985, Pamplona, Colombia) has lived and worked in London for the past five years. She completed her undergraduate degree in Fine Art at Universidad de Los Andes, Bogotá (2004-2008) and, last year, studied A History of Western Art at The Sotheby’s Institute (2013). The work presented here is an exercise in line and space where the artist explores an interest in materials and their phyisical properties (particularly, colour and texture). It is part of a series of drawings that the artist has been working on, in preparation for larger scale works and further drawings. Previous exhibitions include: Degree Show, Universidad de Los Andes (2008); Unsplit Peak Problem, RCA (July 2010); Tannery Arts Summer Shows (2013 & 2014).
