Tannery Arts is a small, independent charity concerned with supporting the professional development of emerging and established artists through the provision of affordable studios, promoting their practice through opportunities to exhibit work, develop projects, generate partnerships with local authorities, private property owners and social housing organisations as well as engage in learning activities.

Drawing is the most immediate and succinct form of visual expression. Today, among young artists and art students, there is a resurgence of interest in this most universal of art forms.
Drawing People is a beautifully illustrated anthology bringing together more than seventy of the most imaginative and skilful contemporary artists for whom drawing is a primary activity, and whose main focus is the human subject. The imagery is brimming with psychological insight, humour, sexuality and pathos. All the work is produced in the 21st century, and only one artist, the presiding figure of Louise Bourgeois, is no longer living.
An international, cross-generational roster brings together artists from China, Japan, Africa, Latin America, Europe, North America and Asia. Artists featured include Francis Alÿs, Louise Bourgeois, Chen Shaoxiong, Francesco Clemente, Marlene Dumas, William Kentridge, Dr Lakra, Paul McCarthy, Nalini Malani, Wangechi Mutu, Emmanuel Régent, Francesc Ruiz, Arpita Singh and Rosemarie Trockel. The introduction places the medium of drawing in its historical context, discussing its intersection with photography, painting, collage and illustration. Five chapters – Body, Self, Personal Lives, Social Reality and Fictions – include short introductions outlining each theme, followed by commentaries on individual artists exploring their style, ideas and techniques, accompanied by finely reproduced images of their recent work.
Drawing People is authored by Roger Malbert, Head of Hayward Touring at the Hayward Gallery, London. He has been a judge for the Jerwood Drawing Prize, and his writing on art has featured in The Independent, Art Monthly, Times Literary Supplement, The Art Newspaper and Modern Painters.
