During our Autumn cohort of RPS After School Club, generously supported by Hauser & Wirth, the children were guided by artist Maymana Arefin in a sculptural workshop inspired by Cristina Iglesias’ exhibition at Hauser & Wirth London, The Shore.
Iglesias’ multi-sensory bronze sculptures, rich with flowing textures, organic patterns, and architectural echoes, immediately captured the children’s imaginations.
Maymana encouraged the children to look closely at the layers, grooves, and patterns in Iglesias’ work, exploring surfaces that evoke roots, rocks, waterways, and imagined terrains. The discussion extended to unusual landscapes, including the surface of the moon, inspiring ideas about textures, forms, and otherworldly surfaces.
Using clay, mark-making tools, and metallic paints, the children pressed, carved, and layered textures, experimenting with grooves, ripples, and flowing lines. The metallic paints highlighted the shadows and raised areas, giving each piece depth and a sculptural presence reminiscent of Iglesias’ bronze works.
Inspired by The Shore, the after-school club children created richly textured, bronze-toned hand-held sculptures. These works celebrate both natural and re-imagined landscapes, and the process of sculpting organic forms.
Hauser & Wirth are generously supporting our Rock Paper Scissors After School Club programme for three years from September 2025 to September 2028.
