In response to the current exhibition Listening to the earth, Arman Nouri invites you to join this sound and writing workshop and create a song or text about the local area around Drawing Room.

rhythmfictions thinks through and with land – in this case, urban space – as a prism to engage with broader concerns around identity and power, paying particular attention to the role of myth and fiction in organising the city. Guided by an ensemble of solo and collective practices—including reading, writing, listening, drawing and percussion—participants will form their own creative expression about the city and their place in it.

The afternoon will be set out in 3 spacious segments:

1. Settling in with tea and a chance to read and share some key texts, including some from the Drawing Room’s library
2. Grounding exercises: breathing, listening, moving together
3. Group walks, to different rhythms, followed by writing, drawing and sharing

The session is aimed at adults but open to anyone interested in listening, walking, drawing, urban spaces and stories.

About the artist

Arman Nouri is an artist, writer and curator. He has presented his work at the Barbican, the Mosaic Rooms, Roundhouse, Ormside Projects, Lethaby Gallery, Theatre in the Mill and the Listening Academy. He has given talks and lectures on art, infrastructure and urban planning at a variety of forums, including Central Saint Martins, University College London and Architecture Foundation. Between 2021 and 2022, he led the Mayor of London’s Culture & Community Spaces at Risk programme. He is the co-founder of Kin Structures, Akazib Records and no.name.sound.
