Life Drawing

Olivia Sterling

This life drawing event was instigated to observe, document, celebrate, and empower the bodies of women, people of colour and those marginalised. It was programmed in response to the exhibition FIGURE/S: Drawing After Bellmer, co-curated by Drawing Room’s Learning Coordinator Sheyamali Sudesh and artist Olivia Sterling.

The gathering reclaimed the female body as well as challenged the traditional format of life drawing, using spoken word and movement as part of the process. Artists Lydia Petit, Precious Opara and Lauren Byfield modelled using fabric as a way to connect and frame their bodies, as well as performed in response to words spoken from Audre Lorde and recordings of Jade Montserrat’s work, on display in the exhibition.
