Kate Burling (b.1998, Reading) lives and works in South East London. Her iridescent finger-paintings are places of rumination, where she attempts to catch elusive ideas and map them in soft, organic space. They help her to pay attention to reticent wants and thoughts which bring themselves to the surface through repetitive imagery, and allow for quiet communication with shy spectators.

Marking the inside and outside of skin as initial zones of softness and hardness respectively, Burling uses finger-painting to observe a gradual obscuring of sense and boundary. The artist’s interest in futurist and surrealist scenes and theatre sets informs her rolling compositions, where idyllic landscape is presented as diorama or costume, and scattered like confetti with compulsive motifs.
