DRAWING MATTERS: Curating and Collecting

For artists today, drawing is no longer supplementary or secondary, but valued as a stand-alone medium and process. Drawing Room has been a substantial player in this changing status through its ambitious exhibitions, publications and participation programme.
 
Twenty years in the making, Drawing Room is a world-renowned non-profit institution, presenting exhibitions of drawings from around the globe. The panel will discuss their vision for this unique institution and explore how the current pandemic has thrown a spotlight on drawing. An art form accessible to all, it has proven itself as the adaptable, provocative and questing medium we know it to be.

Mary Doyle has worked in the visual art sector for over 30 years. She initiated Drawing Room with co-founders Kate Macfarlane and Katharine Stout in 2000 and has co-directed the organisation since. Prior to this, she was Senior Curator at the Contemporary Art Society, leading on acquisitions of contemporary art for fifteen museums throughout England from 1995-2005. She has worked at Arts Council National Touring Exhibitions, the British Council and several commercial galleries in London.

Kate Macfarlane is a curator and writer based in London who began her career in the public visual arts sector at Riverside Studios London in 1984. She co-founded Drawing Room in 2000 and since that time has co-devised the organisation’s vision and programme. Recent exhibitions include ‘A Slice through the World: Contemporary Artists’ Drawings’ at Drawing Room and Modern Art Oxford; ‘Close: Drawn Portraits’ at Drawing Room; ‘Line’ at Lisson Gallery, London, and ‘Dove Allouche – Mea Culpa of a Sceptic’, The Fondation d’entreprise Ricard, Paris.

Louisa Buck is a writer and broadcaster on contemporary art. She has been London Contemporary Art Correspondent for The Art Newspaper since 1997 and is a regular reviewer on BBC radio and TV. She is the author of a number of catalogue essays for institutions including Tate, Whitechapel Gallery, ICA London and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Her books include Moving Targets 2: A User’s Guide to British Art Now (Tate 2000); Market Matters: The Dynamics of the Contemporary Art Market (Arts Council England 2004) and Owning Art: The Contemporary Art Collector’s Handbook (co-authored with Judith Greer) (Cultureshock Media 2006).
