Drawing Act VIII

Tangle Room is a participatory installation taking place in Gallery 1, alongside Emma McNally’s exhibition, The Earth is Knot Flat. Visitors of all ages are invited to drop in and experiment with carbon, paper and tangling

A series of local community groups of various ages will also activate the space to create an ever-evolving display of work. Feel free to pick up some materials and leave your mark!

Tangle Room is part of our Drawing Acts project series which aims to bring community voices and alternative perspectives to our exhibition programme. Conceived by Emma McNally in connection with her solo exhibition The Earth is Knot Flat, this participatory installation invited visitors of all ages to drop-in and experiment with carbon, paper and tangling! Children and adults worked with the variety of papers, drawing tools and materials on offer to tie and tangle, creating an ever-evolving display of work that grew over the duration of the exhibition.

Groups including those from Grange Primary School, London College of Communication and Royal College of Art spent time collectively in Tangle Room. Poems, paper sculptures, and piles of drawings appeared.

Working as Neighbourhood Connectors, Melody Akanji and Leila Bakkali also activated the space, inviting local residents in to discuss the Emma McNally’s work but also how peoples’ personal experiences connect to the themes of power and entanglement.
