Drawing Research Forum

Featuring presentations and a plenary discussion with specialists from various fields whose research utilises and develops current discourse around contemporary drawing, it will provide a space for knowledge exchange between disciplines, encourage cross-fertilization of ideas and methodology, and foster collaborations between artists and researchers.

Speakers include Catherine Anyango, Jethro Brice, Susan Ewing, Simon Fleury and Barbara Pfenningstorff.

Catherine Anyango has published, lectured and exhibited internationally.  In 2010 the publication of her graphic novel adaptation of Heart of Darkness was met with critical acclaim including the Observer’s Graphic Novel of the Month. Current projects look at the emotional manifestations of crime and guilt upon public and private space.  She is a Tutor in Visual Research at the Royal College of Art in London.

Jethro Brice graduated in from the Glasgow School of Art (2006) and has since worked independently as an environmental artist before developing a new hybrid practice as artist-geographer. He is currently engaged in doctoral study, researching cultural geography at the University of Bristol.  Recent exhibitions include The Power of the Sea at the Royal West of England Academy and The Water Knows All My Secrets at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery. 

Suzanne Ewing is an architect and academic based at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA) and The University of Edinburgh, UK.  She initiated and directed Field/Work, the 6th AHRA Conference held in Edinburgh (2009) and is lead editor of the subsequent publication, Architecture and Culture (CELJ 'Best New Journal Award 2014') published by Taylor & Francis. 

Simon Fleury a senior conservator at the V&A, and is currently responsible for the conservation and care of the Museum’s photography collections. This wide ranging role is underpinned by a background in photography, which has included extensive commercial experience, post-graduate study at the Royal College of Art, and an on-going artistic practice.  Fleury is currently studying for a Mphil/PhD (Centre for Fine Art Research, at Birmingham City University).

Barbara Pfenningstorff is a London based artist and practice-based researcher. She has participated in research exhibitions and workshops at the Showroom, South London Gallery, Raven Row, Tate Modern, Chisenhale Studios, Beaconsfield, ICA and the Venice Bienniale.  Apart from writing commentary, she is currently working on shows at Mecklenburgh Square and Banner Repeater in London.
