The Thinking Tantra Research Papers widen the scope of the exhibition and includes three essays. The first, by the exhibition curator Rebecca Heald, explains the curatorial premise of the exhibition and provides a brief history of other exhibitions of tantric art. The essay by Shezad Dawood looks at his work in relation to the Spiritualist medium Georgiana Houghton (1814-1884), the tantric artist Acharya Vyakul (1930-2000), the American experimental film makers James Whitney (1922-1982) and Maya Deren (1917-61) and Beat writer and artist Brion Gysin (1916-86). We reproduce pages from Studio International Vol 181, No 931, March 1971, of an article by Virginia Whiles: ‘Tantric Imagery: Affinities with Twentieth-Century Abstract Art’. Whiles has contributed an essay that reflects upon this earlier article in the light of her research that ‘interweaves ethnographic studies with art practice and theory. The release from disciplinary boundaries offers an anthropological perspective on cross-cultural aesthetics that reframes the rapport with the ‘other’, crucial to our era of a post-colonial art history’.

Born 1974 London, Shezad Dawood lives and works in London. Graduated from BA Central Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design (1994-1997); MA Royal College of Art (1998-2000); MPhil Fine Art (Photography) Royal College of Art (2000-2003); and PhD (Fine Art) Leeds Metropolitan University (2004-2008).
Dawood works across the disciplines of painting, film, neon, sculpture, performance, virtual reality and other digital media to ask key questions of narrative, history and embodiment. Using the editing process as a method to explore both meanings and forms, his practice often involves collaboration and knowledge exchange, mapping across multiple audiences and communities. Through a fascination with the esoteric, otherness, the environment and architectures both material and virtual, Dawood interweaves stories, realities and symbolism to create richly layered artworks.
His work is held in public and private collections including Tate; UBS; LACMA; National Gallery of Canada; US Government Art Collection; The British Museum; Sharjah Art Foundation; Kiran Nadar; and Rubin Museum of Art.

Born 1973 Barton on Sea, Tom Chamberlain lives and works in Bristol. Graduated from Painting at Royal College of Art, London (1999).
Chamberlain’s works denote a process of becoming, eventually congealing into possibility or illumination. His highly process-oriented technique is characterized by the methodical accumulation of marks of an almost mechanical precision. Paintings are built up of countless layers of thinly applied acrylic, while innumerable evenly spaced points of watercolor fill his drawings. What appears monochrome shimmers delicately, revealing depth and substance while evading definite form.
His work is held in public and private collections including Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin; Mona, Hobart; and Kunstsaele, Berlin.

Born 1960 Jersey, Nicola Durvasula lives and works in Walmer. Graduated from MA Fine Art at Kent Institute of Art & Design, Canterbury (2004); DULCO from Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales, Paris (1993); and DNSEP Ecole des Beaux-Arts du Havre (1984).
Durvasula’s practice over the past thirty years extends from drawing and painting to ceramic sculpture, film and sound. With multiple references to South Asian culture and Eastern philosophy, she has often juxtaposed these elements within a Western aesthetic tradition. Born in Jersey (Channel Islands), Durvasula studied in France during the 1980s, then relocated to Hyderabad, India, in 1992 where she lived for ten years. During this time, through her collaboration with artists and institutions, Durvasula became closely associated with the Indian art scene and has often shown in the context of contemporary Indian art. Her notebooks from the past four years reveal underlying threads that link her work, and the ongoing enquiry into her art practice and Indian philosophy.

Jean-Luc Moulène (b. 1955, Reims, FR) lives and works in Paris, FR. Studied MA Arts Teaching, Université Paris, 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, FR (1979); and BA Literature, Paris 1 (1978).
