Find out more about Drawing Room, what we do, and our relationship with studio provider Tannery Arts.
Tannery Arts is a small, independent charity concerned with supporting the professional development of emerging and established artists through the provision of affordable studios, promoting their practice through opportunities to exhibit work, develop projects, generate partnerships with local authorities, private property owners and social housing organisations as well as engage in learning activities.
Since December 2024, we have delivered sessions to Service Users who are part of the SLAM community. From the Drawing Room Studio, sessions have explored painting, printmaking, embroidery and poetry and have been guided by the principle that one thing leads to another.
Sessions begin with a collaborative drawing exercise to invite people to make a mark that is not just their own, and from this, discover new marks and imagery that can become a starting point for something new. The process of collaboration invites creative freedom as well as an opening for self-compassion. Each session introduces new processes and the opportunity to learn a new skill as well as nurturing the time for an individual to be present with a process or material. The displaying of work, if only momentary, offers everybody the opportunity to look and celebrate what has been created and discovered that day.
There is no pressure here. It feels safe
I enjoyed spending time in the company of others outside my home
This is the first group they have ever attended all the way through
I really enjoyed the drawing exercise it helped me calm down
You’ve encouraged and nurtured everyone to be more independent and flourish
I’m learning so much
We can really see a mood shift in our clients and their engagement
I’ve been drawing at home ever since this group. Thank you for providing a safe space
This might be a new hobby for me.
A lot of people are reconnecting to something they did at school; a reminder these skills are there and they are being exercised in a relaxed environment
I found it hard but I came back to it… I Didn’t want it to end
I am most proud that I achieved completing the class
