Artists Sonia Boyce, Margarita Gluzberg and Bob and Roberta Smith present drawings that were pivotal to their development as artists, and discuss the role that drawing plays in their practice.

This in-conversation event by three leading artists in Drawing Biennial 2017 will take place in the gallery space surrounded by over 200 works on paper in the exhibition.

Sonia Boyce MBE (b.1962, London) lives and works in London. She studied at Stourbridge College,West Midlands and is currently a Professor in Fine Arts at Middlesex University, London. She was awarded an MBE in 2007 for services to the arts. Margarita Gluzberg (b. 1968, Moscow, Russia) has lived and worked in London since 1979. Studied at Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford University and Royal College of Art. She is Reader in Contemporary Visual Production at the Royal College of Art. Her practice spans across drawing, painting, installation, photography and performance. She was a Wingate Scholar at the British School in Rome. Gluzberg's work has been presented at major contemporary art spaces including MAC/VAL, Paris; CAC, Vilnius; Rooseum, Malmo; KAde Kunsthal, The Netherlands; Lunds Konsthall, Lund; British School, Rome; and the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill. Her work held in public and private collections including David Teiger, New York; UBS, London; Simmons & Simmons, London; Lodevans Collection, London; Royal College of Art, London; The Essel Collection, Vienna; and Jana Peel, London. 

Bob and Roberta Smith (b.1963, London) lives and works in London. Smith studied at University of Reading (1981-1985) and Goldsmiths College of Art (1991-1993). 'Bob and Roberta Smith' is the pseudonym used by conceptual artist Patrick Brill.  Patrick is a Tate trustee and active artist spokesperson for arts and culture. The artist has become best known for brightly coloured slogans, painted on reclaimed timber or board. Each carries a witty or subversive message, questioning the worlds of art, politics and popular culture. As well as sign painting, he also makes sculptures in cement, performs music with 'The Ken Ardley Playboys', and hosts the radio show 'Make Your Own Damn Music' on Resonance fm. Selected group shows include Tate Britain, London, Hayward Gallery, London, Serpentine Gallery, London, Tate Liverpool, CCAC, San Francisco, National Gallery in Copenhagen, Denmark and CIMA Gallery, Calcutta. Smith's work can be found in public and private collections including the Tate Collection, UK Arts Council Collection and UK British Council Collection.
