An informal afternoon of presentations and group discussion led by individuals who are part of our gallery placement scheme, the DE. FI. CIEN. CY event will include:

– Phantom Futures

Presentation by Andrew Brown, currently studying for an MFA in Curating at Goldsmiths, on the contemporary sites of ruination post 2008 and art practices that have documented and engaged with sites of dereliction in Ireland and Spain. Considering sites of contemporary ruination and dereliction within the context of economic recovery. The presentation will include a brief screening of work by artist Patrick Baxter and drawing upon texts by Robert Smithson and Brian Dillon

– Seizing the Memory Image

Presentation by Maria Teresa Ortoleva an artist who graduated from The Slade School of Fine Art in 2014. Exploring images of the mind, memory-images, and the interaction between material reality and mnemonic images. Looking at how drawing can be a tool to seize the memory image, allowing the digestion and organisation of the data of experience, in which perceptive data and fragments from memory (including one’s own history, culture, language) interact.  The presentation will reference Henri Bergson’s Matter and Memory and the practice of drawing as an act of consciousness.

Chaired by researcher Alexandra Gbedemah. Based on the texts by Smithson, Dillon, and Bergson (Copies of texts will be sent to all ticket holders in advance of the event).
