Brian O’Doherty, artist and writer, in conversation with Professor Margaret Iversen, writer and lecturer University of Essex.

Brian O’Doherty left Ireland for New York in 1957 and emerged as one of the most influential artists in the American art scene of the 1960s. O'Doherty was director of the Visual Arts Program and subsequently Director of the Media Arts Program, National Endowment for the Arts. He is the author of numerous works of art criticism, including his book American Masters and the influential book Inside the White Cube: Ideologies of the Gallery Space. He has had a profound influence on artists and contemporary art studies. This is a rare opportunity to hear Brian talk about his work and influences and the importance of drawing in his practice. 

Professor Margaret Iversen is one of the leading international authorities in the field of art theory and contemporary art. She has regularly published essays and artists monographs. In 2007 she published Beyond Pleasure: Freud, Lacan, Barthes and her present and future research is devoted to the overlapping fields of photography and contemporary art. She is currently working a book on photography and art since the Sixties.
