On the first day of our Shop Pop-Up , join the artist Lisa Milroy and Drawing Room co-director Mary Doyle in an informal discussion about Milroys drawing practice and her project Hands On. Drawings from Hands On are exclusively available for sale through Drawing Room from our online shop or at the Pop-Up.
Lisa Milroy (b. 1959) was born in Vancouver and is an Anglo-Canadian artist who lives and works in London. She studied at St Martin’s School of Art (1978-9) and Goldsmiths College (1979-82). Still life is at the heart of Milroy’s practice. In the 1980s her paintings featured ordinary objects depicted against an off-white ground. In the 1990’s her approach to still life painting shifted and her imagery expanded to depictions of objects within settings, including landscape, architecture, places and people. Her recent focus is on installation-based paintings that can include a performative element. Milroy is fascinated by the relation between stillness and movement and the nature of making and looking at painting. Milroy won First Prize in the John Moores Painting Prize (1988), the Hugh Casson Drawing Prize (Royal Academy of Arts, 2004) and the D+AD Silver Award (2000).
Her work has been included in exhibitions at many prestigious museums, including Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, Whitechapel Gallery, London, and Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany. Milroy’s work is held in many private and public collections including Tate, British Council, Arts Council of England, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany, Fonds Regional d'Art Contemporain Rhone-Alps, France, Metropolitan Art Collection, Japan and Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan.
