She studied at St Martin’s School of Art (1978-9) and Goldsmiths College (1979-82). Still life is at the heart of Milroy’s practice. In the 1980s her paintings featured ordinary objects depicted against an off-white ground. In the 1990’s her approach to still life painting shifted and her imagery expanded to depictions of objects within settings, including landscape, architecture, places and people. Her recent focus is on installation-based paintings that can include a performative element. Milroy is fascinated by the relation between stillness and movement and the nature of making and looking at painting. Milroy won First Prize in the John Moores Painting Prize (1988), the Hugh Casson Drawing Prize (Royal Academy of Arts, 2004) and the D+AD Silver Award (2000). Her work has been included in exhibitions at many prestigious museums, including Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, Whitechapel Gallery, London, and Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany. Milroy’s work is held in many private and public collections including Tate, British Council, Arts Council of England, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany, Fonds Regional d'Art Contemporain Rhone-Alps, France, Metropolitan Art Collection, Japan and Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan. – artlink is the arts and music programme for Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. Arts projects are developed in close collaboration with staff to create a calming atmosphere in wards and departments and to distract, engage and bring pleasure to patients, visitors and staff. artlink projects are almost entirely funded by the generosity of charitable donations or public grants.
