About the work

Mark Titchner’s (b. 1973, Luton, UK) work involves an exploration of the tensions between the different belief systems that inform our society, be they religious, scientific or political. Focusing on an exploration of words and language, much of his recent production has been based in the public realm both in the UK and internationally. This public works often stem from collaborative group activities, working particularly with young people and in mental health settings.

The drawing “The day will take place (III)” belongs to a series where the artist identifies a specific wish or desire, expressing it as a concise statement. Subsequently, repeated letters are eliminated, and the remaining letters are printed and cut out. These letters are then randomly dropped onto a piece of paper, and the resulting form is captured in the drawing. In this particular instance, the drawing is connected to the desire for good health.

Solo exhibitions include those at Firstsite, Colchester, New Art Gallery Walsall, Baltic, Gateshead and Arnolfini, Bristol.

In 2018 he completed a major new public work, ‘Me, Here Now’ which is installed at London Bridge Station.

His work is held numerous Public Collections including Arts Council, Tate, British Council, Government Art Collection, South London Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and Guildhall Art Gallery.
