Samira Abbassy Her Fractal Skirt Year 2024 Medium Collage, tempera, gouache and pen on watercolour paper Dimensions 28 x 21.6 cm Nominated by Iwona Blazwick About the work This work is from the current “Embodied Alchemy” series, which are small spontaneous ink, gouache, acrylic and collage paintings on paper. The process involves flooding the surface with water based paints and wiping into the surface to discover the images in suggested marks. The collage elements, are my own printed reproductions and borrowed reference images, which are then applied for further definition. This method of excavation allows me to access surprising images and ideas ‘from the unconscious’, rather than imposing overly literal, premeditated ideas. The collage reference images are mined from sources including: Islamic Medical/Anatomical MS (C11th -17th) and European (15th C. Medieval MS) alchemical iconography. My interest lies in how they reveal metaphysical / psychological realms through the corporeal, with all its various embodied conflicts and dilemmas.
