About the work

This work is part of an ongoing project entitled – Objects from the Deep.

Images submerged in our memory often surface in different forms. I began to think about the depths we search to find the shipwreck, to find love, the objects we carry across the ocean to other lands.

This work is part of a set of conceptual drawings which reflect on the sedimented nature of objects found in shipwrecks. The intimate pull between object, material and nature fuses and erases the differences of place and identity and becomes a site of confluence and transformation.

Career Highlights

Through a variety of mediums – drawing, film and sculpture, Khan employs a research-driven approach to explore ecology, colonial history and collective memory.

Recent exhibitions include: Unruly Edges, Rossi & Rossi Hong Kong (2024); Sharjah Biennial 15: Thinking Historically in the Present: 14th Gwangju Biennale: Soft and Weak like Water, (2023). In recognition of her initiatives in art and culture, Khan received the Prince Claus Award (2013). In 2019 she represented Pakistan at the 58th Venice Biennale with the solo project, Manora Field Notes.

Collections include: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Seattle Art Museum, Jameel Arts centre, Qatar Museums, Samdani Foundation.
