Margaret Harrison What have you done to My Heart? Year 1971 Medium Graphite on paper Dimensions 34.8 x 30.5 cm (framed) Top pick Selected by Jes Fernie, curator & writer About the work This important drawing was created for a solo exhibition at The Motif Editions Gallery in London in 1971. It brings together ideas of femininity, confectionary and the faux opulence of the chocolate box selection. As Harrison explains, it ‘was one of a series of ironic works examining women’s position in the world e.g. the contrast between the notion of hearts & Roses and reality. Unfortunately, the show was closed by the police for indecency.’ [1] The exhibition focused on the objectification of women in the media, commenting on the then ‘climate of advertising, equating women with juicy, tasty food.’ [2] Other drawings from this series were recently shown in the group exhibition Women In Revolt! at Tate Britain (2024).
