About the work

The figure depicted in the drawing is my wife, taken from a photo of her on holiday in Spain when our daughter was a baby. Those days are blurry memories now. We had dreams and expectations, some we still have, some have altered and evolved, some forgotten.
The drawing is a study for a large painting but was done part way through the making of the painting, a document of a stage of working but also a helping hand to resolve some issues within that bigger work. The painting itself is unfinished and continues to evolve, as we do. I’m enjoying the impossibility of capturing a character, a few (significant?) signs of who she is, what she means to me, and what I (think I) bring to ‘us’. The picture is a document of personal evolution, but it’s also about thrills; thrills in life and thrills in picture making.
