About the work

Sigmund Freud had multiple ashtrays but an oval jadeite dish was purportedly his favourite. My ongoing project ‘In Sigmund Freud’s Ashtray’ revisits this artefact’s biography as both a space in which to play and an analytical metaphor: This yonic ovular dish and the cylindrical phallic cigar, synonymous with Freud, are my alphabet of shapes ones which I reconfigure to portray bodily scenarios on paper and as ceramic sculpture. Should you be in Istanbul this year the ashtray ‘Turkish Trousers’ held in the Ömer Koç Collection is on show at Arter in the current exhibition Suppose You Are Not.
