About the work

This is one of a set dedicated to Anthony Hill, (1930-2020). Hill articulated the link between constructivism, dada, and advanced mathematics.

Hill stated:

‘I support anarchic and iconoclastic ventures in art, they complement the constructive which left by itself can all too easily become either impotent altruism or – worse by far – academicism.’

My drawing follows from those made in tribute to Gillian Wise and Nathalie Dower, as part of ongoing research into British Constructionist and Systems art. For the Dower and Wise series, I used quotations from their own grids and systems. With Hill, combining collage and drawing, particularly using the diagonal line as connective, is enough to evoke his work. The tribute is a starting point and celebration of the many ways into the act of drawing… then I am on my own, riffing on someone else’s lines.

Andrew Bick is Professor of Contemporary Art at University of Gloucestershire and co-Director of Tannery Arts, London. Work in public and private collections includes Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich, The British Museum, Yale Center for British Art, GoMA Glasgow, Goldman Sachs, Leeds Art Gallery, Roche Art Collection, Sainsbury Centre and UBS. He is represented by Galerie von Bartha, Basel and Hales Gallery, London. His monograph with Museum Haus Konstruktiv was published by Hatze Canz in 2020. Recent curation includes Design for a Garden, von Bartha, Basel, 2023 and Analysis, Disruption, System, with Jonathan Parsons and Katie Pratt, for SKK Soest, Germany, 2023.
