About the work

‘First Moons’ draws on the artist’s seasonal sketches made in West Penwith, Cornwall at the beginning of the year. Fields of giant rotting brassicas brushed up against muddy footpaths on every walk this January, looming leafy and alien in the blue glow of winter twilight. The start of the year is often considered to be a bare and harsh time, but there is pleasure in its slow sleepiness and its palette of murky greens and blues. The cold soil is readying for a new cycle to begin, of many more moons to come.
