Drawings happen outside and in the studio: useful for investigating form, they influence how paintings develop. In this watercolour I explore the disturbance and sheen of how surfaces interact – in this case where lichen and moss grew across a tree that had grown bulbously outwards, so that it resembled a figure. An interior space opened up; a kind of splitting globe that provoked an idea for a later painting.

Practice:
Francesca Mollett makes abstract paintings that react to space and context, often taking their starting point from organic subjects rendered so that their details dissolve into nebulous and fluctuating forms. Her works capture reflections of light and surface through a fluid yet precise process, with compositions evolving through observation, analysing the shifting passages of paint as tension between luminosity and solidity develop.

Career Highlights

Born 1991, Francesca Mollett lives and works in London. She graduated from Royal College of Art (2020), The Royal Drawing School (2015) and Wimbledon College of Art (2014).

Francesca was artist-in-resident with the Roberts Institute, Scotland (2023). Solo exhibitions in 2023 include Noon, Pond Society, Shanghai, Halves, GRIMM Gallery, Amsterdam, and Low sun, Micki Meng, San Francisco. Group exhibitions include; Present Tense, Hauser & Wirth Somerset (2024), New British Abstraction, CICA, Vancouver (2023), and The Kingfisher’s Wing, GRIMM Gallery, New York (2022).

Francesca’s works are held in public and private collections including the Sainsbury’s Centre, Norwich and Kunstmuseum, The Hague.
