Uri Aran Equation Under the Sun / Day Out Year 2020 Medium Graphite, oil pastel and colour pencil on newsprint Dimensions 22.7 x 30.5 cm Nominated by Emma Goltz Top pick Selected by Chris Fite Wassilak, writer & critic About the work Originating as an everyday practice in the studio, the drawings’ interwoven elements amount to form enigmatic yet impish tensions and exchanges between characters, unfolding as new realms within the page. In turn, the works have initiated a collaborative response in the writings of others, including its original accompanying text by writer Mason Leaver-Yap. Not restricted to one specific medium Aran’s work is often unfolding like a theatrical storyboard that engage the viewer on a psychological-emotional plane and evoke fragments of narrative and suggestion of formed or half-formed characters permitting each observer to create their own narrative. This sense of narrative is “not necessarily the classic notion of a story with a beginning, middle, and end,” as Aran has said, but rather a more open-ended landscape that proposes multiple routes.
