Danny Rolph Crete Year 2023 Medium Watercolour and ink on Khadi paper Dimensions 30.2 x 21.5 cm About the work Roughly ninety percent of what I create is work on paper. They exist in their own right and are not preparations for Paintings. The source material for these works is emotive and can emerge from anywhere at anytime. It’s an activity that I allow to flow through me with the mediums I choose to employ such as pencil, watercolour, ink and collage. Like many artists I study Art History closely and I find a special resonance with work on paper, across cultures and centuries. It’s a medium that always feels slightly closer to inspiration and, in that respect, maybe the spark of the artist shines a bit brighter? In my own practice I experiment continually with work on paper for its immediacy and to break habits, finding new kinds of expression drawn from the world around me and the subconscious?
