About the work

A small compositional study for my ‘Cats and Girls’ series — a body of life-size pastel drawings of East and Southeast Asian women and their cats devouring food. It explores the historical and cultural ties between femininity and felinity, the repressed appetites and desires of women, a longing for the simplicity and amorality of cats and children, and the sensuality and hedonism of both eating and drawing. Inspiration is taken from the East Asian tradition of narrative scroll painting, the Chinese genre of meirenhua (‘beautiful women pictures’), depictions of mischievous cats across eastern and western cultures, and the lush, tactile materiality of the drawings made by Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Rego.
