About the work

‘Little Bugs Study’ is a preparatory drawing in a series I’m currently working on depicting women working in nurseries and early years childcare. The particular scene in the drawing is of a nursery worker comforting one of the children on an afternoon in late autumn at the outdoor nursery my daughter attends. The subject of my paintings is almost always women and in recent years has focused on women’s working lives, often in the female dominated roles of cleaning, catering and care. Through making this often overlooked and undervalued work the subject of paintings I hope to draw attention to it’s importance and consider the value we place on different forms of labour.
