About the work

The work depicts Giovanni Antonio Galli’s (1708–1782) birthing machine (which currently resides alongside the wax anatomical models at the Palazzo Poggi Museum in Bologna). The birthing machine shows a torso without limbs or head, originally made for anatomical research. The title Hecate that appears as part of the image creates an association between the device and the ancient, Greek goddess Hecate known as the goddess of magic and the protector of witches.
