About the work

In my work for the Biennial, I scoured off the painted surface of an old work on paper. I was pleased that the oil paint had stained the paper a kind of sunlit, uric tone. The paper had also been folded and scratched, perforating the surface and soaking up darker paint in those grooves. The process of making a work like this reminds me of cleaning. I enjoy the idea of releasing colours and forms previously trapped under another surface, and I consider a work like this to have been restored and found, rather than created.
