Alison Turnbull Home Furnishings Indicator Year 2024 Medium Coloured pencil on paper Dimensions 30 x 21 cm About the work ‘Home Furnishings Indicator’ is an inking template for interior designers that I bought in New York some years ago. I placed its shapes randomly on black paper and filled them in with coloured pencil. A few of the outlines are just about identifiable, the baby grand piano for example, but others – the sofas and davenports, the TV cabinet, the lamps and stands – become abstract geometric shapes. I wanted to do something playful and a bit different for the Drawing Biennial but as it turns out, this drawing contains elements common to much of my recent work: the use of found material to make abstract pantings and drawings, and chance and aleatory processes. I like the way the hard coloured pencil sits on the soft, velvety black paper.
