About the work

Since the outbreak of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine on 22 February 2022, Ukrainian artist Alevtina Kakhidze has drawn wide public interest thanks to the critically annotated, diary-like drawings posted on her Instagram account @truealevtina.
The War Diaries drawings contain quickly sketched scenarios combined with elucidating notes. They comment on her day-to-day experience during the war, living under the constant threat of missile strikes and without electricity or central heating, as well as global political discussions. Employing both humour and critical analysis, they reflect on how Ukraine is portrayed by Russia and how Russia is portrayed by Ukraine.
