About the artist

Born 1944 Newcastle upon Tyne, Phyllida Barlow lives and works in London. Studied at Chelsea School of Art (1960-1963); and Diploma in Fine Art, Slade School of Fine Art (1963 -1966).

For more than 50 years, British artist Phyllida Barlow has taken inspiration from her surroundings to create imposing installations that can be at once menacing and playful. She creates anti-monumental sculptures from inexpensive, low-grade materials such as cardboard, fabric, plywood, polystyrene, scrim and cement. These constructions are often painted in industrial or vibrant colours, the seams of their construction left at times visible, revealing the means of their making. After joining the staff in the 1980s, Barlow taught at the Slade School of Art for more than twenty years before retiring in 2009 and is now Emerita Professor of Fine Art.

Selected solo exhibitions include a survey presentation at Haus der Kunst, Munich (2021); cul-de-sac, The Royal Academy of Arts, London (2019); Phyllida Barlow: folly, La Biennale di Venezia, British Pavilion, Venice (2017); ARTIST ROOMS: Phyllida Barlow, Turner Contemporary, Margate (2017); and demo, Kunsthalle Zürich (2016).
