Francis Upritchard Two Pebbles Year 2020 Medium Watercolour on paper Dimensions 29.6 x 21.1 cm About the work I’m interested in stones at the moment, and pebbles splashing into water. A friend made me new homemade paints – this watercolour uses the colours she gave me, and a new fan brush. Date and country of birth 1976, NZ About the artist Born 1976 New Plymouth, Francis Upritchard lives and works in London. Graduated from Canterbury University of Fine Arts (1997). Upritchard is a sculptor but drawing is a big part of her practice. It’s a place to note down ideas and experiment without the hassles of gravity, costly materials and time-consuming 3D processes. For her this often evolves into playing with colour and texture on the paper, without a care for its connection to sculptural form. Selected solo exhibitions include Big Fish Eat Little Fish, Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle (2020); Wetwang Slack, Barbican Curve, London (2018); Jealous Saboteurs, City Gallery Wellington and Muma, Melbourne (2016); Francis Upritchard, Anton Kern Gallery, New York (2016); Francis Upritchard, The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2014); Whitechapel Gallery Children’s Art Commission: Francis Upritchard, Whitechapel Gallery, London (2014); Mandrake, The Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2013); and A Hand of Cards, Nottingham Contemporary (2012).
