About the work

Alice Channer is an artist working with sculpture. Her work traces the disappearance, mutation, and possible evolution of bodies and of materials in post-industrial environments. Her works are made up of multiple surfaces that are pleated, curved, s t r e t c h e d , e x p a n d e d and contracted to explore sculptural concerns of volume, form, dimension and weight. By treating the surfaces, materials and processes that make up our post-industrial environment in this way, she asks what it is to be both disembodied and embodied in relation to these flat places, be these technological, industrial, virtual or commercial.

About the artist

Born 1977 Oxford, Alice Channer lives and works in the edges of London. Graduated from BA Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London (2006); and MA Sculpture from Royal College of Art, London (2008).

Channer’s forms and materials are found in the social and sensual, and worlds of industrial and organic processes. Over long periods of time, she immerses herself in industrial and natural materials and production processes to find forms within them that can be developed as sculpture. Her method is both experimental and precise, collaborating with people, machines, and materials to bring multiple bodies and voices into her polyphonic works.

She has exhibited widely over the last 15 years, at international institutions.

Her works are held in public and private collections including Guggenheim Permanent Collection, New York; Arts Council Collection, London; Tate Permanent Collection, London; Aïshti Foundation, Beirut; Daskalopoulos Collection, Athens; The UBS Art Collection, Zürich; Government Art Collection, London; Nottingham City Art Gallery, Nottingham; and Southampton City Art Gallery.
