NEW DATE ANNOUNCED!!
In 2022, Drawing Room celebrates its 20th birthday. To mark the anniversary we are looking back at momentous exhibitions and projects from our recent and more distant past and talking to the artists and contributors who made them happen, examining the centrality of drawing to creative practice from the perspective of artists. In the fifth of this year long series we look back to ROCK PAPER SCISSORS and Drawing Acts, two programmes developed and delivered by our engagement team.
This online event features artists Charmaine Watkiss (Drawing Act III: collective un/conscience) and Sadegh Aleahmad (Art is Within You! ROCK PAPER SCISSORS) in conversation with Betsy Dadd, Drawing Room’s Bridget Riley Art Foundation Engagement Curator.
About the speakers:
Sadegh Aleahmad is a London based Iranian-born artist who examines the construction of his diasporic identity through performance, sculpture, drawing and photography. His work de-territorialises various Islamic disciplines, detaching them from their personal, religious and socio-political connotations, and fuses them with the aesthetics and ethics of Western contemporary artmaking. Sadegh has a background in science and a PhD in Fine Art from Kingston School of Art. His current practice spans solo work and community collaborations.
Charmaine Watkiss is a London based artist who explores history and cosmology through life sized figure drawings. Her ‘memory stories’ are a way of describing a process of retrieval. She starts with a theme and then allows intuition and the imagination to take over along with a call and response with the work itself. She holds an MA in Drawing, from the UAL Wimbledon College of Art and was shortlisted for the Womxn of Colour Art Award 2020. Recent exhibitions include The Abstract Truth of Things, Tiwani Contemporary, 2020; Me, Myself and I, Collyer Bristow Gallery, 2020; Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize, 2019; Against Static, Wimbledon Space, 2018.
