Born in 1972 in London, Alice Anderson lives and works in London. Graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (2001); and Goldsmiths College, London (2005).
In a world where machine learning and algorithms govern the fate of humanity, the artist examines what we can learn from our body in its relationship with the universe and its own ‘algorithms’. Anderson's approach underscores the urgency of the human dimension in a contemporary world driven by technology. The artist gives substance to the immaterial through ritual-like performances which generate sculptures, drawings and paintings. She paints with colour and weaves copper wire, a symbol of cerebral and digital connectivity. These dazzling or meditative dances transport her to a level of consciousness which our modern world has all but forgotten, but which Joseph Beuys or Anna Halprin also explored in their time. By activating certain technological objects or chosen forms through precise movements, Anderson ‘memorises’ and ritualises them.
Her work is held public collections including Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Espoo Museum; Wellcome Collection, London; Fond National d’Art Contemporain, Paris; and Centre National des Arts Plastiques, Paris.
