Hurvin Anderson:

Hurvin Anderson (b. 1965, Birmingham, UK) lives and works in London, UK. Studied Art Foundation, Birmingham Polytechnic, UK (1991); BA Hons Fine Art Painting, Wimbledon School Of Art, UK (1994); and MA Painting, Royal College of Art, UK (1998). Anderson is known for exploring his Jamaican heritage through depictions of verdant Caribbean landscapes, tangled into abstractions and figuration, tranquil scenes merging unstable ideas of memory, conjoined histories, and cross-culturalism. His work sheds light on the complexity of growing up in England while desiring to reconnect with familial roots, which he accomplishes through a dedication to the medium of painting itself. Select solo exhibitions include Foreign Body, Michael Werner Gallery, New York, US (2016); Hurvin Anderson: Dub Versions, New Art Exchange, Nottingham, UK (2016); Hurvin Anderson: Backdrop, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, CA (2016); Hurvin Anderson: New Works, Thomas Dane Gallery, London, UK (2013); Hurvin Anderson: reporting back, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, UK (2013); Hurvin Anderson: Subtitles, Michael Werner Gallery, New York, US (2011); and Art Now: Hurvin Anderson, Tate Modern, London, UK (2009). Select group exhibitions include Jamaican Pulse: Art and Politics from Jamaica and the Diaspora, Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, UK (2016); Making & Unmaking: An exhibition curated by Duro Olowu, Camden Arts Centre, London, UK (2016); Poetics of Relation, Pérez Art Museum, Miami FL, US (2015); and 4 Painters, 10 Works, Josh Lilley, London, UK (2014).
