Sherman Sam:

Sherman Sam (b. 1966, Singapore) is an artist and writer based in London and Singapore. In his work, drawings are as important as paintings. They both take as long to come to fruition and the approach to process is similar. As much as his drawing is an engagement with the ontological nature of drawing, it is also begins with the nature of abstraction and the language of drawing as a point of departure. He has exhibited his paintings and drawings internationally, including solo shows at The Suburban, Chicago; Rubicon Gallery, Dublin; Lugar do Desenho, Porto; the Centro de Arte, San Joao de Madeira, Some Walls, California; and most recently at at Equator Art Projects, Singapore. His work has also been included in numerous group shows in Europe, including M6: Around London, Majorca; Sight Mapping, Sweden, Scotland & Spain; Plan D, an exhibition which he curated, Portugal and Ireland; Rhyme not Reason, Janet Kurnatowski Gallery, New York; and Paper: A-Z, Sue Scott Gallery, New York; Connected, Feature Inc New York; and The Theory and Practice of Small Paintings, Equator Art Projects, Singapore. He works regularly with the Rubicon Gallery in Dublin and Equator Art Projects in Singapore. From 2006-8 he was the Inspire curatorial fellow at the Hayward Gallery in London, and was the selector for the Pro Arts 2010 Juried Annual in Oakland, California.
