Michael Armitage:

Michael Armitage (b. 1984, Kenya) currently lives and works in London. He studied at the Slade School of Art, London and The Royal Academy, London. Using imagery that is derived from a type of tourist painting familiar to East African markets, his landscapes engage with the development of contemporary African art from the market place to the museum. They bring into question the function of art within the rapidly changing cultures of East Africa and the position of the artist within the development of the Identity and Politics of the region. Selected exhibitions include: Drawing Biennial 2015, Drawing Room, London (2015); Studio 1:1, London (2014); Drawing Biennial 2013, Drawing Room, London (2013); Myth and Market, Studio 1:1, London (2013); Connecting Worlds, Drawing Room/ UBM Project, London (2013); Premiums, Royal Academy of Art, London (2009); and Ascension, Simon Oldfield, London (2008). Armitage's work is also part of the Frank Suss Collection.
