Tim Knowles (b. 1969, Cheltenham) lives and works in London. Knowles studied at Bath College. He recently launched a major collaboration with The Royal Mail, presented as an online work, publication, and exhibition. In 2010, Knowles was awarded a British Council & CO-OS ignite research visit to Brazil. Chance is crucial to Knowles’s work, which is generated by apparatus, mechanisms, systems and processes beyond the artist’s control. A situation is engineered in which the outcome is unpredictable, directed by the external forces. These operations or performances seek to reveal the invisible forces in the world around us and investigate the nature of hidden systems. Recent solo exhibitions include: 2011: Galeria Vermelho, Sao Pauolo, Brazil (forthcoming); bitforms, New York (forthcoming); The Horticultural Society, New York (forthcoming). 2010: Galleria SIX, Milan. 2009: Windbarbs, (public commission), Plymouth Hoe, Plymouth City Council & Plymouth Arts Centre; Wanderlust, Plymouth Arts Centre. Selected group exhibitions include: 2011: Incidental Data, UTS Gallery, Sydney (forthcoming). 2010: Cimento dell’armonia e dell’invenzione, Galerija Gregor Podnar, Berlin; Over Yonder Commission, Leeds Digital Art & various Yorkshire venues.
