Erika Vogt:

Erika Vogt (b.1973, USA) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She received her MFA in experimental video from California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA. In 2014, Vogt was featured as a guest lecturer at The Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada. In 2013, Frieze Film commissioned Vogt’s film “Dark Imposter,” which she completed in residency at the Experimental Media, Performing Arts Centre at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. Working in video, sculpture, drawing, and installation, Erika Vogt engages in a conceptual investigation of different image-making processes. This is formalized through the layering of images, materials, and media. In her video works, Vogt layers analog and digital technologies that encompass animated sequences of found and drawn imagery. The works suggest loose narratives which manifest through performances by other artists and friends. Vogt's invented characters often perform repetitive, quasi-ritualistic gestures with objects that are emblematic of their roles in the film or suggestive of the work's overall narrative. Vogt’s work resists any fixed singular reading. The drawings combine elements of improvisation, note-taking, and visual puns. The objects and sculptural works bring these forms into three dimensions, coalescing into a field of graphic shapes and incorporating cast and painted objects. These forms evoke familiar relics such as architectural remnants, tools, and weights, which are chosen for their potential to activate the viewer's experience of the space.  Recent solo exhibitions have been presented at The New Museum, New York; Triangle France, Marseilles; and Hepworth Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Vogt's work has also been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, NY; Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Whitney Museum, NY; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and SFMOMA.
