Tonico Lemos Auad (b. 1968, Belém, BR) lives and works in London, UK. Studied at Goldsmith’s College, London, UK (2000); and Urban Architecture at FAU-USP, São Paulo, Brazil (1997). Auad creates lyrical, often transient forms using a wide range of materials, from the ephemeral and everyday, to the precious and enduring. Notions of luck, traditional anecdotes, chance, and the supernatural pervade Auad’s work, but beyond playfulness, his work resonates with a darker underbelly of existence; an awareness of death and the brevity of life is always near at hand. Select solo exhibitions include Tonico Lemos Auad, De La Warr Pavilion, East Sussex, UK (2015-16); Tonico Lemos Auad, CRG Gallery, New York, US (2016); That Which Cannot Be Repaired, PIVÔ, São Paulo, BR (2015); Paisagem Noturna, Galeria Luisa Strina, São Paulo, BR (2013); PINTA, The Modern & Contemporary Latin American Art Show, London, UK (2013); Tonico Lemos Auad, Stephen Friedman Gallery, London, UK (2012); and Carrancas and Reflected Archaeology, The Folkestone Triennial, Folkestone, UK (2011).
