Joy Gerrard:

Joy Gerrard (b. 1971, Ireland) lives and works in London, and graduated with an MA and MPhil from the Royal College of Art, London. Her practice investigates protest crowds and occupation of urban spaces, archiving media images from the Occupy movement, Arab risings and elsewhere. Exploring the historical and iconographic qualities of these images, her studio-based work (re)presents them in detailed pen and ink drawings, and combines these with abstracted ink compositions. Each day brings new protests and new images. Each marks an insistent questioning of the relation between the mediation of urban crowds; how their meanings are contested locally and globally; and the hopes, fears and aspirations of those who protest.  As such, these images seek an optic through which a wider world of protracted conflict, global economic uncertainty and social division comes in to view. Selected exhibitons include: Jerwood Drawing Prize, Jerwood Space, London and touring (2013); Drawing Biennial, Drawing Room, London, (2013/15); Project Spacematerial, Los Angeles, (2012); 182nd RHA Annual Exhibition, Invited Artist, RHA; Dublin (2012); Double Take, Studio 3 Gallery, University of Kent (2012); Jerwood Drawing Prize, Jerwood Space, London and touring (2011); Research Exhibition, Royal College of Art, London (2010); Then and Now, Evolving Art Practices, Glucksman Gallery, Cork (2009); The Space Between, The Crypt, Kings, Cross, London (2009); Space, Fear and the Multitude, solo show, MCAC, Portadown, Northern Ireland (2009); AIB Award, AIB exhibition space, Dublin (2008); John Gerrard/Joy GerrardTemple Bar Gallery, Dublin (2008); The Aesthetics of Space, Ubu, Glasgow (2007), and The Longest Day, solo show, Acava Studios, London (2007)
