Humphrey Ocean (b. 1951, UK) lives and works in London. Studied at art schools in Tunbridge Wells, Brighton and Canterbury. He was elected a Royal Academician in 2004 and in 2012 was made Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy. In 2009 he was part of Life Class: Today’s Nude with Alan Kane for Artangel and in 2012-13 showed A handbook of modern life, forty new portraits on paper, at the National Portrait Gallery, London. In 2013 he was one of 57 artists who had a painting displayed on billboards across Britain in Art Everywhere organised by the Art Fund. In 2015 he was made an Honorary Doctor by University of Kent and was included in books + papers at Christine Koenig Galerie, Vienna. In 2016 he presented The Essay on BBC Radio 3 about the influence of Impington Village College, the only British building by Walter Gropius. Select solo exhibitions include A handbook of modern life, National Portrait Gallery, London (2012-2013); Now and Then, Canterbury Christ Church University (2012); and Here and There, Jesus College, Cambridge (2011). His work is held in public collections including the British Council Collection; The Whitworth Art Gallery; Imperial War Museum; Wolverhampton Art Gallery; National Portrait Gallery; National Maritime Museum; and Victoria and Albert Museum.
