Emma Stibbon:

Emma Stibbon (b. 1962 Munster, Germany) lives and works in Bristol. Studied at Goldsmiths College, London and at the University of the West of England, Bristol. She is Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Brighton. Drawing is fundamental to Stibbon’s practice. Her work emerges through her practice of walking and gathering research ‘in the field’, often drawing from observation and using the camera. Back in the studio she constructs large-scale drawings using fragile drawing media such as chalk on blackboard or volcanic ash on paper. Stibbon is drawn to locations that are in a condition of flux, dynamic formation or erosion. Recurring themes in her work reflect on how the apparently monumental or permanent can be so fragile. Stibbon was elected an Royal Academician (2013). Residencies include the Project Pressure to document glaciers in the Annapurna Range, Nepal (2017); National Parks North Rim Residency, Grand Canyon (2017); Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park Residency (2016); Josef amd Albers Foundation, Conneticut (2016); the Scott Polar Research Institute placement in Antarctica (2013); the Arctic Circle expedition to Svalbard, Norway (2013); and the Derek Hill scholarship at the British School at Rome (2010). Select career highlights include the Stiftung Federkiel residency at the Spinnerei, Leipzig; and the 4th international Gyumri Bienniale, Armenia. Select exhibitions include Galerie Bastian, Berlin; the Polar Museum, Cambridge; R O O M, London; the Stadtmuseum, Berlin; and Alan Cristea Gallery, London. Her work is held in private and public collections including the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne; the Stadtmuseum, Berlin; Bristol City Museum; and Art Gallery, Pallant House Gallery, Chichester; Potsdam Museum, Germany; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
