Lothar Götz:

Born 1963 Bavaria, Lothar Götz lives and works in London and Berlin. Graduated from Fachhochschule, Aachen (1988); Universität Wuppertal Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (1995); and Royal College of Art, London (1998).

Götz is renowned for work that uses the language of abstraction to remake, play with and shift viewers’ readings of architecture and space. His work ranges in scale from whole buildings – transforming complete façades through compositions of geometric colour – to room-sized wall-paintings, to paintings on canvas and A4 drawings. Recurring references in his work relating to ideas of architectural space come from the colour theories of the Bauhaus as well as memories from Götz’s own childhood of Baroque churches and 1970s modernist bungalows in Southern Germany where he grew up. The work, composed of highly-coloured geometric forms and shapes, plays with our reading of buildings, galleries and rooms – riffing off each space’s architectural idiosyncrasies and playing with our perception of space.

Selected public site-specific installations include Piccadilly Underground Station, London (2007); Miro Foundation, Barcelona (2010); Love Festival, Southbank Centre, London (2014); Pallant House Gallery, Chichester (2016); Leeds Art Gallery (2017); MIMA, Middlesbrough (2019); and Towner, Eastbourne (2019). Selected solo exhibitions include Salvation, Domobaal, London (2020); Fairground abstract, Hatton gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne (2019); Glass Cloud Gallery, Camden People's Theatre, London (2019); If only, Petra Rinck Galerie, Düsseldorf (2019); Backstage, David Risley, Copenhagen (2018); and Götzbau (with David Gates), Domobaal, offsite in Bradfield (2018). Selected group exhibitions include Paintings, Groelle Pass Projects, Wuppertal (2019); Face to Face, Contemporary Art from London, Warsaw (2019); The Momentum, Angus-Hughes, London (2018); Seurat to Riley, The Art of Perception, Compton Verney (2017); Drama Queen, Museum Morsbroich, Leverkusen (2016); London Open Triennial, Whitechapel Gallery, London (2015); and To go too far, Petra Rinck Galerie, Düsseldorf (2015).
