Helena Goldwater:

Helena Goldwater lives and works in London. She studied at Goldsmiths (1986-9) and Slade School of Art (1990-92) and has been making performance art since 1989 and paintings since 2003. In both practices she is interested in the meeting of the erotic and grotesque through the exploration of bodily-related materials. She often makes performances that last many hours and her paintings can take months to make – this dedication to the process is a way of exploring how concepts can be developed over time to inhabit something ‘other’ than the human realm, questioning the positioning of subjectivity and transforming the everyday into a devotional act. Recent exhibitions include: 2014: The pleasure of small partings, The Extractor Space, London, Natural History II, Art First, London. 2013: Come closer, Art First, London, With an Apple I Will Astonish, Large Glass, London. 2012: Once in a while it’s important to clear out your glory-hole, 1st Venice International Performance Art Week, Italy, Bodies of Memory, Tate Britain, Hot Soak, Performatorium, Canada, Performance Transition, Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall. 2011: Funnel of love, Café Gallery, London, If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution, de Appel, Amsterdam. She is included in the publications 2014/5: Double Exposures by Manuel Vason (LADA/Intellect). 2013: Nature Morte by Michael Petry (Thames and Hudson), Emergency INDEX 2012, and contributed to 2013: Living and Present: Laurie Anderson on Performance Art, BBC Radio 3, Cast Iron Radio.
