Francis Upritchard (b. 1976, New Plymouth, NZ) lives and works in London, UK. Studied Fine Art, Canterbury University of Fine Arts, NZ (1994-97). Upritchard sculpts small figures that she combines with found objects such as imitation Wedgwood vases, ceramic lamp bases, and vintage jewelry. Using beautiful custom-made tables crafted by her furniture-designer husband, Martino Gamper, Upritchard creates nostalgia-laden tabletop tableaux that explore asceticism and excess by dwarfing symbolic human characters and archetypes with cast-off detritus from everyday life. Awards include winning the Walters Prize, Aukland Art Gallery (2006). Residencies include Belem Contemporary Art Flux, Belem, BZ (2004); Camden Arts Centre, UK (2004); Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, NZ (2007-8); and Artspace, Sydney (2008). Select solo exhibitions include Jealous Saboteurs, City Gallery Wellington, NZ (2016); Francis Upritchard: Dark Resters, Ivan Anthony Gallery, Auckland, NZ (2016); Francis Upritchard, Anton Kern Gallery, NY, US (2016); Francis Upritchard, The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, US (2014); Whitechapel Gallery Children’s Art Commission: Francis Upritchard, London, UK (2014); Mandrake, The Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin, IR (2013); and A Hand of Cards, Nottingham Contemporary, UK (2012).
